These chairs are traditional vernacular chairs which are made in the Ligurian town of Chiavari by Fratelli Spinetto / Spinetto Brothers. Italy, 1950s. When famous architect Gio Ponti designed his signature chairs for Cassina – the Leggera and later the Superleggera – he based himself upon this wonderful and very delicate design by the Chiavari craftsmen. Ponti loved the stripped back design of these traditional chairs. He said: “the more minimal the shape, the more expressive it becomes”. The lightness and minimalist approach already was present in these chairs by Fratelli Spinetto. They have a wonderfully elegant and delicate design with a frame in ebonized wood and with seats of straw. They look very elegant from every angle and are very lightweight and compact. Please note these chairs are often wrongly named / attributed with Spinetto as their model name and Chiavari as their designer or the company. But of course they were made by the Spinetto brothers from the Italian village of Chiavari. This particular set of chairs comes in a very good vintage condition with a desirable patina on the wooden frames. Every chair is signed at the underside.
