Pamono Antique English Oak Fold-Over Table, 1670s Outlet

A fine and distinguished provincial English gateleg table in solid oak, dating to the late 17th century, at the transition from the Charles II to William & Mary period. The table is crafted with outswept feet, a rare period design detail that greatly enhances its character and desirability. This distinctive feature makes it especially appealing to collectors and connoisseurs of early English oak furniture.
Beneath the oval top, a single drawer is neatly fitted to the frieze, its thick sides constructed without dovetails but joined by nails and pegs – a hallmark of authentic 17th-century joinery. The drawer has been fitted with a later pull, sympathetic in appearance.
The oak has developed a deep, lustrous patina over more than three centuries, the hand-sawn timber displaying tool marks, natural shrinkage, and the rich characterful wear of genuine age.
Gateleg tables first appeared in the mid-17th century and soon became a hallmark of country joiners across England. Almost always made in oak, their ingenious folding design ensured both practicality and endurance, securing their place as prized family heirlooms passed through successive generations.
